How to make sandals.
These sandals are for Dr. Evil, but the
technique is the same for any figure.
Trace around his foot.  Then go around
adding another 1/16th to outline.
Cut out the template.
Use template to draw a left foot and right foot sandal on a
piece of paper.  Then hold up to the light ot position them
on the leather (good side up).
Here is the good side of the leather
I will be using for the upper sandals.
Here is the backside which has been coated
with Liquitex Matte Medium to "fix" the furry
texture and make it flat.
Staple the pattern to the leather.
Use the feet to mark the location of the straps - make them tight
up against the foot for a tight fit.
This is a modified xacto chisel
blade that will be used to cut
the slits in the sandals.  It has
been ground down to a
narrower width.
Cut the slits.  Align the blade so that it
is 90 degrees to the pattern.
I hope you can make out that I am
using the width of the chisel blade
as a guide to set the width of the
straps.  Once aligned, cut with a
rotary knife.
Here are the cut straps and here are the cut straps with their ends
mitred (to make it easier to pass them through the sandal).
Here I am using the screwdriver
blade on my small Swiss army
knife to widen the slit from the
top.  Then turn it over and widen
the same slit from the bottom.
Here I am using the flat tweezers from my small
swiss army knife to pass through the leather all
the way until they are fully opened.
Then I'm grasping the leather strap to pull it
down through the leather.  Make sure the good
side of the strap is up.
Here the straps are in place with right sides up.
Put the feet into the straps and snug them up
fairly tight.
